Beautiful Kwanzaa History
Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana Studies, as a way to celebrate African American culture, heritage, and community. Emerging during a period of social change and cultural awakening in the United States, the holiday was designed to reconnect African Americans with their ancestral roots and shared values. Its name comes from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning “first fruits,” which reflects traditional African harvest festivals that honor family, community, and gratitude.
Celebrated from December 26 to January 1, Kwanzaa centers on seven guiding principles known as the Nguzo Saba: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Each day focuses on one of these principles, often symbolized through the lighting of candles on the kinara. What are the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa
1. Umoja (Unity)
