It’s one of the most visible signs of poverty: people sleeping on the street, in doorways or on park benches. Homelessness is a complex problem with no easy solution. But there are things we can do to help.  Homelessness is often caused by a lack of affordable housing. People may also become homeless due to economic issues, such as job loss or underemployment. Some people experience homelessness because of mental illness or addiction. And many veterans are struggling with homelessness.

There are a number of ways to help people who are homeless. We can donate money or time to organizations that work to end homelessness. We can also be more understanding and accepting of people who are experiencing homelessness. Sometimes, all it takes is a smile or kind word to make a difference in someone’s day.

WORLD HOMELESS DAY:  A BRIEF HISTORY OF HOMELESSNESS

Homelessness is nothing new. In fact, it is as old as civilization itself. The first recorded instance of homelessness occurred in ancient Greece, when a group of wanderers known as the ‘accouchees’ were expelled from the city of Athens. Since then, homelessness has been a feature of every major civilization, from Rome to China to the Americas. Today, homelessness is a global problem, with an estimated 100 million people worldwide lacking a permanent place to call home.
