March 7 – National Library Workers Day

National Library Workers Day is a day dedicated to honoring the hard-working librarians and library staff who serve their communities. From school librarians to public library aides, each plays an important role in partnering education with literacy. The process of obtaining information is greatly enhanced by such helpful individuals. On National Library Workers Day, take some time to thank them for the essential work they do; whether it be providing research materials or helping others find a favorite book title from childhood. Our libraries couldn’t work without their ability to collaborate on projects, share resources and ideas, and spread knowledge. It’s a profession worthy of recognition, so let’s celebrate our library workers this special day!

HISTORY OF BOOKS

Books have been around since at least 600 BC, and over the years they have gone through many changes. The earliest books were made of papyrus plant sheets glued together, while later ones were created from animal skins wound around a rod to form a scroll. By the 15th century strides had been taken towards codex books (that could open flat) and printed pages with movable type, which made book production much quicker and easier. Later still came bound collections of loose-leaf paper and ultimately paperback books, which are now ubiquitous. Over the centuries different cultures and societies have embraced various formats for their literature, but all indicate a love for sharing knowledge and telling stories that will last for generations.
