January 15 – World Snow Day

World Snow Day was created to get everyone around the world, from children to adults, embracing the winter season by celebrating snow. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of the chilly weather on your skin as you hurl yourself down a hill on a sled or curl up in the soft snow of a freshly-made snowman. The day encourages people to find new ways to enjoy and respect nature in all its magical forms. To celebrate World Snow Day this year, why not vamp up your regular snowball fight or daily walk outside by breathing in the cold winter air and taking some time to marvel (and feel lucky!) at its beauty?

HISTORY OF WORLD SNOW DAY

World Snow Day is an annual celebration of snow that has been around since 2012. It began when the International Ski Federation (FIS) wanted to promote a love of skiing and snowboarding amongst people of all ages and backgrounds. Each World Snow Day event is different, but some activities vary from participating in ski classes to children experiencing snow for the first time! It’s a fun way to get everyone out on the slopes and celebrating the joys of winter sports in the great outdoors. Whether you’re new to skiing or a seasoned pro, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy the crisp winter air, white-covered terrain and some quality family bonding time in nature.

FIVE THINGS ABOUT SNOW

  1.  No two individual snowflakes are the same.  Every snowflake has its own unique shape depending on the conditions under which it formed – something scientists are still studying today!
  2.  Snow is actually a very efficient insulator; up to 90% of the solar energy reaching it gets reflected back into space!
  3.  Technically speaking, any form of precipitation that falls from frozen clouds at temperatures below zero degrees Celsius should technically be called “snow” – so in some areas you may get “sleet” or even “hail snow”.
  4.  In colder climates where deep piles of snow build up over the winter season, underneath coats a growing layer of ice – creating an ideal home for tiny invertebrates like nematodes.
  5.  Packing snowballs? It turns out they take much less effort than making sandcastles thanks to something called “the cohesion effect”.
