β€οΈπ€π Why Itβs Worth Celebrating Juneteenth
Juneteenth celebrates freedom, resilience, community, culture, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. It marks June 19, 1865 β the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had officially been signed.
For many families and communities, Juneteenth celebrations include cookouts, music festivals, parades, prayer gatherings, educational events, art, dancing, red foods and drinks, and conversations that connect generations together. Itβs a celebration rooted in remembrance, but also in hope, pride, joy, and community connection.
Most importantly, Juneteenth reminds us that freedom matters, stories matter, and understanding history helps build a better future.
β€οΈπ€π A Brief History of Juneteenth
On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring enslaved people in Confederate states legally free. However, enforcement depended heavily on Union troops advancing throughout the South.Β Β More than two years later, on June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced General Order No. 3, informing enslaved African Americans that they were free.
That date became known as Juneteenth β combining βJuneβ and βnineteenth.β Communities began celebrating almost immediately through gatherings, prayer services, music, food, education, and family events.Β Β Over generations, Juneteenth grew into an important cultural celebration across the United States. In 2021, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in the United States.
