Talk Like a Pirate Day celebrates silliness, imagination, playful language, seafaring stories, treasure-hunting adventures, and the irresistible fun of pretending to be a pirate for a day.

You do not need a ship, a sword, a buried treasure chest, or even a particularly convincing pirate accent to join the celebration. Replace “hello” with “ahoy,” call your friends “mateys,” dramatically demand to know where the treasure is hidden, and add an enthusiastic “Arrr!” whenever the conversation needs a little extra excitement.

⚓ A Brief History of Talk Like a Pirate Day

International Talk Like a Pirate Day began in 1995 when friends John Baur and Mark Summers started speaking like pirates during a racquetball game. The joke amused them so much that they decided it deserved its own annual celebration.

Although the idea began on June 6, they selected September 19 as the official date because it was easy for Summers to remember. The two friends adopted the pirate names Ol’ Chumbucket and Cap’n Slappy and continued celebrating their wonderfully ridiculous holiday.

Talk Like a Pirate Day remained a small inside joke for several years. That changed after humor columnist Dave Barry wrote about the celebration in 2002, introducing it to a much larger audience.

The idea quickly captured people’s imaginations. Pirate enthusiasts, families, classrooms, workplaces, libraries, restaurants, museums, and community groups began joining the fun.

Today, Talk Like a Pirate Day is celebrated every September 19 with pirate costumes, themed parties, treasure hunts, nautical crafts, pirate movies, amusing social-media posts, and plenty of exaggerated “Arrrs,” “Ahoys,” and “Shiver me timbers!”
