Give one to someone. Photograph a spectacular holiday display. Make a poinsettia craft. Decorate your Christmas table. Try a new color. Learn the surprising story behind the plant. Or simply notice how this one flower has somehow become almost as recognizable at Christmas as the tree itself.

Step 2: Inspiration: Choose Your Poinsettia Style

🌺 The Classic Christmas Poinsettia
Go traditional with brilliant red poinsettias surrounded by evergreen branches, pinecones, berries, candles, and twinkle lights. There’s a reason this combination comes back every December—it instantly looks like Christmas.
🤍 The Winter White Poinsettia
Choose creamy white poinsettias and pair them with white lights, silver, gold, greenery, or natural wood. It’s a softer look that works beautifully with winter and neutral Christmas décor.
🩷 The Pretty-in-Pink Poinsettia
Poinsettias aren’t limited to red and white. Look for pink, blush, salmon, speckled, marbled, or variegated varieties and build your decorations around a completely different Christmas color palette.
🎁 The Poinsettia Gift
Bring a poinsettia to a neighbor, friend, coworker, teacher, host, caregiver, or someone who could use a little Christmas cheer. Add a ribbon and a handwritten note and you’ve got an easy December gift that doesn’t feel like an afterthought.
✨ The Poinsettia-Without-the-Plant
Use poinsettias on wreaths, ornaments, wrapping paper, greeting cards, table linens, artwork, pillows, garlands, and Christmas crafts. If keeping another living thing alive in December sounds like one responsibility too many, you can still celebrate.

Poinsettias can be elegant, traditional, whimsical, colorful, crafty, or wonderfully over-the-top. Choose the version that looks like Christmas to you.

Step 3: Easy: 5 Steps to Create a Simple Poinsettia Display

🌺 Choose Your Poinsettia
Start with one healthy plant in a color you love. Red is classic, but white, pink, marbled, and unusual varieties can make the display much more interesting.
🪴 Upgrade the Container
Hide the plastic nursery pot inside a basket, ceramic planter, decorative bucket, Christmas tin, or pretty container you already own. Even wrapping the pot with kraft paper and ribbon can completely change the look.
🌲 Add Something Green
Surround your poinsettia with evergreen branches, eucalyptus, rosemary, holly, or artificial Christmas greenery. A little contrasting green makes the colorful bracts stand out.
✨ Add a Little Christmas
Tuck in pinecones, ornaments, ribbon, battery-operated fairy lights, berries, bells, or a few decorative picks. You don’t need all of them. One or two details are enough.
🏠 Put It Somewhere Unexpected
The dining table is obvious. Try the kitchen island, entryway, guest room, desk, bathroom counter, bedside table, or another spot that could use a little Christmas.

Helpful Tip: Don’t feel like you need a giant poinsettia display. One beautiful plant in the right place can have more impact than filling the house with decorations you don’t particularly love.

Step 4: Essentials: Make National Poinsettia Day Easier

🔥🌺 Poinsettia Artificial and Real Flowers
Tuck poinsettia blooms into wreaths, garlands, Christmas trees, centerpieces, gift packages, or greenery when you want the look without caring for another plant.
🔥🪴 Decorative Christmas Planter
Replace the standard foil wrapper with a pretty planter, basket, pot cover, or decorative container that coordinates with your Christmas décor.
🔥✂️ Poinsettia Craft Supplies
Paper flowers, floral picks, ribbon, felt, cardstock, wreath forms, and other simple supplies make it easy to turn poinsettias into ornaments, gift toppers, wreaths, and decorations.
🔥✨ Battery-Operated Fairy Lights
Add a tiny strand of warm lights around a poinsettia display, centerpiece, mantel, or group of plants for instant Christmas sparkle without a visible cord.
🔥🎁 Poinsettia Gift Bags and Wrapping Supplies
Turn a poinsettia into a ready-to-give Christmas present with a decorative plant sleeve, ribbon, gift tag, or festive bag.

🌺 Why It’s Worth Celebrating National Poinsettia Day

December can become a giant list of things we’re supposed to accomplish.  Buy the gifts. Wrap the gifts. Mail the cards. Decorate the house. Make the cookies. Attend the parties. Plan the meals. Find the ugly sweater. Remember the stocking stuffers.

National Poinsettia Day asks considerably less of us.  Notice something beautiful.  Poinsettias appear almost everywhere in December, but they’re so familiar that it’s easy to stop really seeing them. Look closely and they’re remarkable; huge splashes of red, pink, cream, and white appearing right when much of the outdoor landscape has gone gray and dormant.

They can also create connection. Bring one to someone who lives alone. Leave one on a neighbor’s doorstep. Give one to the person hosting Christmas dinner. Let a child pick the weirdest-colored poinsettia at the garden center. Buy one every year and take a photograph of it in the same spot.

It doesn’t need to become another elaborate holiday tradition.  Buy a flower. Give a flower. Make something pretty. Take a picture.

Sometimes that’s plenty of celebration for one December day.

✨ A Brief History of National Poinsettia Day

Poinsettias are native to Mexico and parts of Central America, where the plant has a history that stretches back long before it became associated with Christmas in the United States.

The plant’s American name comes from Joel Roberts Poinsett, a botanist and the first U.S. minister to Mexico. During his time in Mexico in the 1820s, Poinsett became interested in the striking red plant and sent specimens back to his home in South Carolina.

The plant eventually became widely known in the United States as the poinsettia.

December 12 was chosen for National Poinsettia Day because Poinsett died on that date in 1851. The day also falls conveniently during the Christmas season, when poinsettias are at their most visible.

And here’s the fun part: those big colorful sections that look like flower petals aren’t actually the flowers.

They’re modified leaves called bracts. The poinsettia’s actual flowers are the small yellow structures clustered in the center.

Over time, growers developed poinsettias in an enormous range of colors and patterns, and the plant became one of the most recognizable symbols of the Christmas season.

Which is pretty impressive for a plant whose flowers most of us barely notice.
