Frankenstein is a novel by Mary Shelley, first published in 1818. The novel tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a grotesque, sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the novel when she was eighteen, and it was published when she was twenty-one. The first edition was published anonymously, with a preface written by Lord Byron.

The novel was not immediately successful, but it gained popularity after the 1823 stage adaptation starring Peers Williams as the Monster.  Many readers have been drawn to the story for its themes of science gone wrong, Hubris, agonal nature of man, and others.
