December 25 was not originally known as the exact day of Christ’s birth—it was chosen centuries later as a symbolic date. Early Christians didn’t celebrate birthdays at all, and the Bible gives no specific date for Jesus’ birth. By the 4th century, however, church leaders selected December 25 as the Feast of the Nativity.
Early Christians chose December 25th to celebrate the Nativity, a time that also aligned with Roman festivals like Saturnalia and the Feast of Sol Invictus, both filled with feasting, greenery, and light to mark the turning of the seasons.
This blending gave Christmas a dual character—both sacred and celebratory—where the message of hope and new beginnings harmonized with festive customs already beloved by the people. One of the best parts of the holiday season is enjoying all of my favorite Christmas things, from the cozy and the festive to the bright and the joyful. I love slipping into fun apparel and matching family pajamas that make the season feel playful and warm, and nothing beats stepping outside to see twinkling outdoor lights that bring a magical glow to winter nights. Inside, beautiful Christmas dishes add sparkle to every meal, while advent calendars bring daily excitement and little surprises leading up to the big day.
All of these traditions—big and small—come together to create that unmistakable feeling of Christmas joy, wrapping the season in comfort, color, and celebration.
ARTIFICIAL CHRISTMAS TREES
I never thought I’d be the kind of person to buy an artificial Christmas tree, but a next-door neighbor died one year and he had willed me his small tree, and I loved it! I couldn’t believe how easy and beautiful it was. No more hauling, watering, or constant sweeping of pine needles—just a perfectly shaped tree that lights up the room year after year. It felt like a big change at first, but now it’s one of the best holiday decisions I’ve made.
But, what about the festive outing, you might ask?
I still love the tradition of going out to shop for a real Christmas tree—it’s part of the magic of the season. To enjoy both, I make the outing a festive experience: walking through the rows of evergreens, soaking up the scent of fresh pine, sipping hot cocoa, and maybe picking up a wreath, garland, or small tabletop tree to bring that real Christmas fragrance indoors. This way, I get the joy of the holiday adventure while still enjoying the ease and sparkle of my artificial tree at home.
