SANTA’S LIST DAY:  A BRIEF HISTORY OF SANTA CLAUS

Santa Claus has a long, festive history that dates all the way back to the 3rd Century! Despite his larger-than-life, jolly figure today, Santa’s original purpose was quite different. In ancient Turkey and European nations, he was known as Saint Nicholas, patron saint of children. He would personally visit homes with gifts during Christmastime.

Over time, Saint Nicholas evolved into Father Christmas in England and Sinterklaas in Holland. Stories of this legendary figure eventually made it to America, where he became known as Santa Claus – a plump old man dressed in a red suit who gifted presents with the help of his magical reindeers on Christmas Eve. Today, Santa is a beloved holiday icon worldwide – but he still remains true to his origins!
