HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

International Women’s Day is a celebration of the achievements and advancements women have made in the fight for gender equality. This important day has been observed annually on the 8th of March since 1975, but its history dates back to the year of 1857. On that day, women in New York City protested against their working conditions and demanded better treatment and equal rights. Their courage and determination inspired others around the world and sparked the movement that became International Women’s Day.

The date of March 8th marks a historic moment that reminds us of the strength and resilience of women throughout history, and the ongoing fight for equality that continues today.

TEN IMPORTANT WOMEN WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE WOMEN’S MOVEMENT

  1.  Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906):  An influential suffragist and women’s rights activist, Anthony played a pivotal role in the women’s suffrage movement in the United States.
  2. Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815–1902):  Co-founder of the American women’s rights movement, Stanton advocated for women’s suffrage and equality, co-authoring the Declaration of Sentiments at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848.
  3. Sojourner Truth (c. 1797–1883):  A powerful advocate for abolition and women’s rights, Truth delivered her famous speech “Ain’t I a Woman?” in 1851, challenging gender and racial inequality.
  4. Alice Paul (1885–1977):  A leader in the American suffrage movement, Paul organized the National Women’s Party and played a key role in securing the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote.
  5. Emmeline Pankhurst (1858–1928):  A British political activist, Pankhurst founded the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and was a prominent leader in the British suffragette movement.
  6. Rosa Parks (1913–2005):  While Parks is best known for her role in the civil rights movement, she also contributed to the women’s movement by challenging racial and gender discrimination.
  7. Gloria Steinem (b. 1934):  A feminist icon, journalist, and social-political activist, Steinem co-founded Ms. magazine and played a vital role in the second wave of feminism in the United States.
  8. Malala Yousafzai (b. 1997):  A Pakistani activist for female education, Malala survived a Taliban assassination attempt and continues to advocate for girls’ rights to education globally.
  9. Eleanor Roosevelt (1884–1962):  The longest-serving First Lady of the United States, Roosevelt was a staunch advocate for human rights and women’s issues, playing a key role in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  10. Betty Friedan (1921–2006):  Author of “The Feminine Mystique,” Friedan co-founded the National Organization for Women (NOW) and was a central figure in the American feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
