VETERANS DAY:  A BRIEF HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY

Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed on November 11th. This holiday honors all military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The date of Veterans Day was originally chosen to commemorated the signing of the Armistice Agreement that ended World War I. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring November 11th as “Armistice Day” to honor the brave servicemen and women who had fought in “The Great War.”

In 1938, Congress passed a law making Armistice Day a legal holiday. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day to honor all American veterans of all wars. On June 1st, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill into law that officially changed the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
