Sunday Dinner Roast Beef: How an Easy Air Fryer Meal Brings Instant Comfort

Sunday Dinner Roast Beef

sunday dinner roast beefComfort food without the all-day commitment!  This is a hack that makes me very happy!

Remember when a Sunday dinner roast beef meant giving up your entire day?

Now it’s about 20 minutes — and it still feels like a proper Sunday dinner.

Hours of peeling, prepping, basting, waiting—and being tethered to the kitchen while the house smelled amazing but your patience slowly disappeared.

The food was wonderful.
The time commitment? Not so much.

This is one of those moments where modern convenience quietly improves happiness.

With an air fryer, you can enjoy the comfort, warmth, and satisfaction of a roast dinner in a fraction of the time—without sacrificing flavor, and without turning your whole day into a cooking marathon.

Sunday Dinner Roast Beef, Simply Delicious

Here’s how low-effort this can be:

  • about 4 ounces of roast beef

  • chopped potatoes – skin and all

  • carrots – also unpeeled

  • optional onion

  • a little oil, salt, and pepper

Toss everything together.
400° for 15-20 minutes.

That’s it.

If you’re new to air fryer beef, a quick temperature check with a meat thermometer takes all the guesswork out.

No hovering. No basting. No waiting half the afternoon.

Sometimes I just add a little butter at the end and call it perfect.  Ok, actually I always do this!

Happiness doesn’t require extra steps.  Just finding little tidbits of joy.

I use this same air fryer method for filet mignons, and it honestly still feels special every single time. There’s something deeply satisfying about taking a beautiful cut of beef, seasoning it simply, and letting the air fryer do its thing—no smoke, no splatter, no stress. The outside comes out perfectly seared, the inside stays tender and juicy, and the flavor feels restaurant-level without the effort or the price tag.

It turns an ordinary meal into something that feels intentional and indulgent, reminding me that delicious food doesn’t have to be complicated to feel luxurious or joyful.  For medium rare, I do two small filet mignons about 15 minutes on 400, but you do you and cook to your preference.

Cooking times can vary by cut and different air fryers.  Here is a suggested schedule, but I would recommend experimenting to your liking.  The air fryer makes it really easy to put a time on it and check, then pop it in for more cooking, if necessary.

Suggested Air Fryer Cooking Times for Beef (Roasts & Steaks)

These times assume:

  • Beef is room temperature

  • Air fryer preheated to 400°F

  • Beef is seasoned simply (salt, pepper, oil)

  • Times are for medium-rare to medium doneness
(Add 2–4 minutes if you prefer more done.)

🥩 Beef Steaks (Filet, Ribeye, Sirloin)

  • 5–6 oz: 7–9 minutes (flip halfway)

  • 7–8 oz: 9–11 minutes (great for filet mignon)

  • 9–10 oz: 11–13 minutes (thicker cuts benefit from resting)

  • 11–12 oz: 13–15 minutes (check internal temperature early)

🍖 Beef Roasts (Roast Beef)

  • 1 lb: 18–22 minutes (flip halfway if shape allows)

  • 1.5 lb: 25–30 minutes (ideal “Sunday dinner” size)

  • 2 lb: 32–38 minutes (rest 10 minutes before slicing)

  • 2.5 lb: 40–45 minutes (check center temperature carefully)

Cooking times are approximate. Thickness, air fryer model, and starting temperature can affect results—use a meat thermometer for best accuracy.

How to Preheat an Air Fryer

  1. Turn the air fryer on and set it to the temperature your recipe calls for (most beef recipes use 400°F).

  2. Set the time for 3–5 minutes.
    That’s it—no food inside yet.

  3. Let it run empty until the timer ends.

  4. Add your food immediately once it’s preheated so you get that nice sear and even cooking.

You don’t need much, but these remove friction and make the whole process easier:

Simple Gravy for Air Fryer Roast Beef (No Drippings Needed)

One thing the air fryer doesn’t give you is pan drippings but that doesn’t mean you have to skip gravy.

This is my go-to when I want that cozy Sunday dinner feeling without turning it into a whole production.

You’ll need:

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 tablespoons flour

  • 1 to 1½ cups warm beef broth

  • salt and pepper to taste

How to make it:

  1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat

  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute

  3. Slowly whisk in warm beef broth until smooth

  4. Simmer gently until thickened (3–5 minutes)

  5. Season to taste

That’s it.

It’s simple, comforting, and does exactly what gravy is supposed to do, make everything feel finished.

If you like a richer flavor, a splash of Worcestershire or a pinch of onion powder works beautifully.
