Hanukkah History
Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday that commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century BCE. The history of Hanukkah begins with the Maccabean Revolt, when a small group of Jewish fighters, the Maccabees, rose up against the powerful Seleucid Greek empire. Under the rule of King Antiochus IV Epiphanes, Jewish religious practices had been outlawed, and the Temple was desecrated with idols and pagan sacrifices.
After a long and courageous struggle, the Maccabees reclaimed the Temple and sought to purify it. When they went to light the menorah—the Temple’s sacred seven-branched candelabrum—they found only enough consecrated oil to last one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight full days, allowing time to prepare and consecrate more oil.
This event became the foundation of Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew. To this day, Jews around the world celebrate by lighting the menorah for eight nights, adding one candle each evening. Hanukkah also includes traditions such as playing dreidel, eating foods fried in oil like latkes and sufganiyot, and celebrating the triumph of faith, resilience, and light over oppression and darkness.

Why is Hanukkah Celebrated for 8 Days?
Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days to honor the miracle of the oil that occurred during the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. When the Jewish people, led by the Maccabees, reclaimed the Temple after defeating the Seleucid Greeks, they found only a small flask of purified oil, enough to keep the Temple’s menorah burning for one day.
Miraculously, the flame lasted eight full days, which was the time needed to prepare and consecrate new oil. This lasting light symbolizes hope, faith, and divine intervention, which is why Hanukkah is observed for eight nights.
The holiday usually falls in late November or December, depending on the Hebrew calendar. It begins on the 25th day of Kislev and continues for eight nights. Because the Hebrew calendar is lunar-based, the exact dates vary each year. For example, in 2025, Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 14 and ends at nightfall on December 22.
Each night, Jewish families light the menorah (hanukkiah), adding one candle per evening until all eight (plus the helper candle, the shamash) are lit, celebrating the enduring miracle of light in times of darkness.

The dreidel is a four-sided spinning top that has become one of the most beloved symbols of Hanukkah. Each side of the dreidel bears a Hebrew letter—Nun (נ), Gimel (ג), Hei (ה), and Shin (ש)—which together form an acronym for the phrase “Nes Gadol Haya Sham,” meaning “A great miracle happened there.” The game originated during the time when Jewish people were forbidden from studying the Torah under Greek rule. To disguise their lessons, children and adults would pretend to play a simple spinning game whenever soldiers approached.
Over time, the dreidel became a joyful part of Hanukkah celebrations. To play, each participant begins with an equal number of coins, candies, or chocolate gelt. Players take turns spinning the dreidel and follow the letter it lands on—Nun means do nothing, Gimel means take the whole pot, Hei means take half, and Shin means put one in. The mix of luck, laughter, and tradition makes the dreidel game a timeless favorite for families celebrating the Festival of Lights.
